Vroom! Vroom! It’s Jen Carver here again from Banner Events sharing a vintage race car Cub Scout Pinewood Derby I styled with my awesome Cub Scout Pit Crew. If you’re familiar with the Cub Scout program, chances are you’re also familiar with the ever popular Pinewood Derby. This event challenges boys to design their own racecars using a Pinewood Derby car kit and adhering to some strict rules on weight and overall design. Once their cars are built, they then race against one another. It’s a fun event the boys look forward to every year! We had fun revving up excitement for this yearly Cub Scout tradition by organizing a race event that families could enjoy trackside. We geared up for race day with loads of racecar inspired decorations and desserts. This Cub Scout Pinewood Derby was a lot of fun!
Some of my favorite details from this Vintage Race Car Cub Scout Pinewood Derby are:

Revving up excitement for our Cub Scout Pinewood Derby was easy thanks to adorable invitations designed and customized by Maureen of Anders Ruff and printed by Driftwood Printing. Our Cub Scouts and their families were anxious to race on over and test out our Pack’s new(ish) Pinewood Derby track! Boys and their parents got to work creating some pretty amazing cars!
Upon arrival, each Cub Scout made his way to the Pit Stop, where his car was checked for weight and rule compliance. A driver’s license was given to each boy after his car was officially cleared for racing.
The Pinewood Derby Track was where all the fast paced action took place. We roped off the audience viewing section using checkered car lot flags from Oriental Trading Company. The flags added a festive racing vibe, but also protected the track from onlookers tempted to interfere by stepping over it or touching it.
Once racing was over and while awards were being finalized, the racers and their families got to enjoy a variety of treats from our dessert table. A customized backdrop from Anders Ruff made for an impressive display that was quick to hang and can be used year after year. Mylar racing themed balloons flanked each side of the table and added that extra touch of fun to our much anticipated event. The front of the table was accented with a printable “happy racing” banner from Anders Ruff’s printable collection.
We kept the dessert table props and decor simple since we needed to accommodate a variety of treats to feed over 100 people. Tin cans were covered in vintage motor oil labels found online, and racing flags (Oriental Trading) were perched on top.
Desserts were all chosen to coordinate with our racecar theme. I used my galvanized metal 3-tiered stand to showcase chocolate donut “tires” and vanilla and chocolate cupcakes topped with printable racecar toppers. Metal pails were filled to the brim with adorable traffic sign suckers (Oriental Trading). Gorgeous sugar cookies by the talented Flourish Sweet Shop, were displayed on beds of color coordinating Sixlets and literally flew off the platters. Our Hostess HoHo & Oreo-wheeled “road speedsters” were an easy DIY dessert and made for a fun racecar inspired treat. Adding creative name labels for the food was a fun touch.
Racers and their fans needed plenty of refueling throughout the night. We put together a beverage/refueling station to meet the demand! Again, with the large custom signage from Anders Ruff’s collection, a cool checkered table skirt (Oriental Trading) and a handful of racing flags, it was easy to create a cute and functional drink station. Plastic oil drip pans from the local dollar store helped hold themed napkins and plates from Oriental Trading. Metal drink dispensers were filled with white and chocolate milk. Cute racing cups (Oriental Trading) and paper straws from Celebration Lane made this self-service fueling station a breeze. For those who preferred to refuel with water, we had plenty of water bottles on hand, each decked out in an awesome racecar printable label.
Following refreshments, it was time to announce our official Pinewood Derby winners and recognize all of the participants for their hard work! We set up an awards podium opposite from the dessert table. We dressed this area up with more balloons, printable posters, cars and banners. An awesome racecar fabric bunting by The Party Teacher added the perfect embellishment to the front of our awards table. We repeated the look of the stacked DIY oil cans and checkered flags from the dessert table and arranged trophies for each Cub Scout. Special printable labels were added to trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.
Each Cub Scout was presented with a trophy and a gable box (Hoopla Events) dressed up in a themed label and tag and filled to the brim with fun goodies and prizes, including a custom wrapped chocolate bar. This was a meaningful way we could recognize each scout and thank them for “racing on over”.
We appreciate the incredible businesses and volunteers who helped pull off such a fun night for our Cub Scout Pack, especially Rochelle Pettingill for capturing the excitement of the night on her camera. The boys and their families are already looking forward to a rematch on the track next year!
