Dr. Seuss Party – Whimsically Seusstastic

Dr. Seuss Dessert Table

This Dr. Seuss party brings all the whimsy of Dr. Seuss to life with it’s bright bold colors, crazy patterns, and cleverly named treats.  Sneetch Treats, Green Eggs and Ham Cake, and trufulla trees are only a few of the things that would make the Cat in the Hat feel right at home.  We caught a glimpse of this party on Facebook and knew that it was too Seusstastic not to share.  Stephanie, owner of Love & Sugar Bakeshop, stylist of the party, and mom to the 1 year old birthday boy, shares detail below on how she brought this Dr. Seuss party to life!

Some favorite elements of this party:
– Green Eggs and Ham Birthday Cake
– Trufulla Trees placed throughout the party (DIY directions below)
– Sugar Cookies topped with an A, B, or C
– Cleverly named foods all with a Seuss theme

I chose to go with a Dr. Seuss theme for my son Sawyer’s first birthday party because he was given some Dr. Seuss books for Christmas and had always been drawn to the colours of the Cat in the Hat tv show. I took a lot of inspiration from Seuss Landing at Universal Studios Orlando when we were there on vacation because I wanted to incorporate a lot of the bright, bold colours and fun shapes associated with Dr. Seuss. This was quite the challenge since I had to make sure that the colours still complemented each other and the different patterns didn’t clash.

I thought this would be a great opportunity to attempt my first ever dessert table. I did all the styling and made most of the desserts. This included a mini smash cake (vanilla bean cake with strawberry buttercream), vanilla bean marshmallows, a 3D green eggs and ham cake (vanilla bean cake and dutch chocolate cake with dark chocolate buttercream), vanilla sugar cookies, chocolate dipped pretzels, red velvet cake pops, and chocolate vegan cupcakes.

I stacked a few Dr. Seuss books on a pedestal cake stand to give more height to the smash cake and to tie in with the theme. I used a striped plastic table cloth as the table backdrop. I created the food tent cards and cotton candy labels by scanning images from Dr. Seuss books and editing them on Photoshop. I made custom cupcake wrappers by printing a template on card stock then wrapped it around each individual cupcake. I love that Anders Ruff had a Dr. Seuss themed banner that perfectly matched all my party decor.

I set up a photo area where our guests could snap a polaroid with a life sized Cat in the Hat cut-out mounted on a wooden stand. My husband made several free standing truffula trees using paper tissue poms attached to black pipe insulation that was supported by pvc pipe. We scattered these around the house so that there was a few in every room where the guests mingled.
