Today we want to share with you an easy tutorial on how to make wooden cake stands.
If you recall, we had a fabulous giveaway a few weeks ago from A Fabulous Fete showing off her beautiful wooden cake stands. Lauren, the owner sent us several to use for our Christmas photoshoot, North Pole Christmas Holiday Printable Collection. We decided we loved them so much, we had to make more!
While we made them, we thought it would be great to photograph the steps for those of you who might want to make some as well. However, if you aren’t as handy… don’t forget about Lauren’s originals from A Fabulous Fete!!!
Supplies needed:
1. Unfinished wooden candlesticks – various sizes
2. Unfinished wooden circular plaques (with beveled edges) – various sizes
3. Permanent wood glue/gorilla glue
4. Spray paint
First you need to glue the top of each wooden candlestick to the center of the bottom of the wooden plaques. Let dry according to glue directions.
Next, spray paint the unfinished wooden cake stands (follow spray painting directions from can)
We painted the bottom sides first. Let them dry… then painted the top-sides.
We applied several coats throughout the day to ensure all sides were coated evenly. Spray paint dries quickly… so we were able to apply coats every 10 min or so.
That’s it!
Below on the dessert table, were our painted cake stands. We used them to display various cookies!
The cake stands that we used for the Hot Chocolate Bar were from A Fabulous Fete! She created her tops of the circular plaques with the smaller beveled edge towards the bottom, and we did the reverse. Either way works just great!

These are super cute! I’ll have to make them for my next party!
Thank you for sharing on this fabulous tip. Completely genius!
What site did you go to for the unfinished candle sticks and circular plaques?
Were the tall ones “tippy”?
Not too bad, at all!
Love this! thanks for sharing, I am off to make some! 🙂
Cute…so cute!!
Do you need a special paint that is “food friendly”?
We didn’t use “food friendly” paint – however, if you are concerned, you can use cupcake liners, or other paper liners just to be safe! 🙂
Hi there!
Can you tell me what you use for your backdrops in your photos?
I would like to build one for my party. Thanks
Hi there! We use fabric covered boards… super easy!
Also, here is another way if you need your backdrop to stand in the middle of the room … https://andersruff.com/custom-printable-parties/uncategorized/diy-tutorial-building-a-dessert-table-backdrop/
I love this tutorial! We are getting probably three two-tiered cakes for our wedding and I wanted to make cake stands at different heights. Just wondering where you purchased the unfinished candlesticks and circular plaques? And were the taller ones “tippy” at all as someone else asked?
XOXO,
Rebecca
Hi Rebecca!
YES! They were a bit tipsy, so Id recommend putting a small plaque at the bottom, too, to help stabilize it.
We got ours online – just google “wooden plaques” or “wooden candlesticks”…. Wood craft sites all over!
Thanks!
